When you are sourcing a used CAT excavator for a project in Latin America, Africa, or Asia, the first question is usually: can I actually get the exact model I need, at a price that works, within a realistic timeframe? This comparison looks at the three main sourcing routes — buying from a Chinese independent exporter, waiting for a local dealer trade-in, or importing from a private seller — across five dimensions that matter to international buyers: cost, quality, lead time, customization, and availability. All data points below come from currently listed units at Anhui Gangya Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., which operates under the brand CAT Excavator Export. We are an independent exporter based in China. We are not affiliated with Caterpillar Inc., and we do not represent any authorized dealer network.
The table compares these routes on typical outcomes observed in real transactions. The figures for the exporter route are drawn from live inventory.
| Dimension | Chinese independent exporter (Anhui Gangya) | Local dealer trade-in | Private import from another market |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical FOB price for a mini excavator (under 10 t) | $16,000–$26,000 | $30,000–$45,000 (often with dealer markup and local taxes) | $18,000–$35,000 (varies by origin country and condition) |
| Typical FOB price for a 20–30 t class excavator | $15,000–$97,000 depending on year, hours, and condition | $50,000–$120,000 | $25,000–$90,000 |
| Lead time from order to port of loading | 7–21 days | 30–90 days (subject to trade-in availability) | 30–60 days (including inspection and export clearance) |
| Quality transparency | Start-up video, photos, and inspection report of the actual machine provided before purchase | Limited; often no third-party report | Variable; depends on seller's willingness to document |
| Customization (attachment prep, paint, decals) | Possible for some units, quoted case by case | Rarely offered on used units | Usually not available |
| Availability of specific models | Single units in stock; stock changes weekly | Dependent on local trade-in cycle | Dependent on private seller listings |
For example, a 2025 CAT 307E2 mini excavator with 500 hours is currently in stock at an FOB price of $17,000. The same model from a local dealer in a typical emerging market often lists between $28,000 and $40,000, before import duties and local transport. A 2022 CAT 306E2 with 800 hours is available at $16,000 FOB. These are single units, priced on their own, and the price is the specific FOB price for that one machine. The year and hours are given as a reference, not as proof of use. A buyer can see a start-up video, photos, and an inspection report of the actual machine before committing.
Cost comparison: what you actually pay
The FOB price is only part of the landed cost. For a mini excavator under 10 t, ocean freight from China to Lagos, Nigeria, typically runs $2,500–$4,500 depending on the season and shipping line. To Mombasa, Kenya, it is often $2,000–$3,500. To Santos, Brazil, $3,000–$5,000. These are estimates based on common routes; your freight forwarder will provide a firm quote. On top of freight, you pay destination port charges, customs clearance, and import duty. For many African and Asian markets, the HS code for excavators is 8429.52, and the duty rate is often around 5% of the CIF value, though this varies by country. Always confirm with a local customs broker.
When you compare the total landed cost of a $17,000 FOB CAT 307E2 from China against a $35,000 local dealer price, the savings can be significant — often $10,000 or more, even after freight and duty. That difference matters for contractors running multiple machines or dealers building a rental fleet.
For larger machines, the spread is even wider. A 2011 Caterpillar 320DIMPORT with 8,000 hours and a Grade B condition rating is listed at $15,000 FOB. A 2017 CAT 336D is available at $41,000 FOB. A 2023 CAT 336GC is $97,000 FOB. These are real listings from our current stock. Local dealer prices for equivalent machines in Africa or Latin America are frequently 40–80% higher, because the dealer has already paid import duties, storage, and margin. If you are sourcing for a project where the machine will work for 2–3 years and then be resold, the lower acquisition cost from an independent exporter improves your total cost of ownership.
One caveat: the lowest price does not always mean the best value. A machine with 8,000 hours may need undercarriage work or hydraulic service soon. That is why we provide an inspection report and a start-up video. You can see the actual condition before you buy. If you need a machine with lower hours, expect to pay more. A 2025 CAT 307.5 with 500 hours is $26,000 FOB. A 2022 CAT 308E2 (one unit in stock) is $21,000 FOB. These are priced according to year, hours, and condition.
Lead time and logistics: from order to jobsite
Lead time is often the deciding factor. If you have a project starting in six weeks, you cannot wait three months for a dealer trade-in. Our typical lead time from confirmed order to port of loading is 7–21 days, depending on the machine and the documentation. We handle export clearance under Chinese customs export regulations. We can arrange inland transport to the port — usually Shanghai, Qingdao, or Tianjin — and book ocean freight on your behalf or coordinate with your forwarder.
Once loaded, transit time depends on destination. To Lagos, Nigeria, it is typically 30–40 days. To Mombasa, 25–35 days. To Callao, Peru, 35–45 days. To Jakarta, 20–30 days. These are typical ranges; actual schedules vary by carrier and season. We provide the bill of lading and all export documents so you can clear customs at destination.
Compare that to a local dealer: they may have a machine on their yard, but if they do not, they must source it from another market, which adds 30–60 days. A private import from another market often involves a seller who is not a regular exporter, leading to delays in inspection, payment, and shipping. The independent exporter route is usually the fastest for a specific model because we hold stock and ship regularly.
Availability and customization: what you can actually get
Availability of specific CAT models fluctuates. As of this writing, we have one unit each of the CAT 307E2, CAT 306E2, CAT 307.5, and CAT 308E2. We also have larger units: a 2011 CAT 320DIMPORT (8,000 h, Grade B) at $15,000 FOB; a 2017 CAT 336D at $41,000 FOB; a 2023 CAT 336GC at $97,000 FOB; and others. Stock changes weekly. If you need a model that is not listed, we can source it from our network in China, but lead time may be longer — typically 14–30 days to find and inspect a suitable unit.
Customization is limited but possible. For some units, we can arrange attachment preparation (for example, adding a hydraulic breaker circuit), repainting, or decal removal. This is quoted case by case and adds 3–7 days to lead time. We do not offer financing or rental services. We are a cash-on-delivery exporter; payment terms are typically 30% deposit and 70% before shipment, or as agreed in the sales contract.
Quality is documented, not claimed. Every machine comes with a start-up video, photos, and an inspection report of the actual unit. We do not use stock photos. The inspection report covers engine, hydraulics, undercarriage, and cabin. If a machine has a known issue, we disclose it. This is part of our transparent approach: you see what you buy before you pay the balance.
Who should pick what
If you are a contractor or dealer in Africa, Latin America, or Asia and you need a specific CAT model within 3–6 weeks, and you want a transparent price with documented condition, the independent exporter route is likely your best fit. You get a lower FOB price, faster lead time, and the ability to inspect the actual machine remotely. This is especially true for mini excavators under 10 t, where our prices range from $16,000 to $26,000 FOB for units with 500–800 hours.
If you need a machine immediately and cannot wait for ocean freight, a local dealer trade-in may be your only option, but expect to pay a premium of 40–80% and accept less transparency on condition. If you are buying a very old or very large machine and have a trusted contact in another market, a private import could work, but you bear more risk on inspection and logistics.
For most international buyers sourcing used CAT excavators, the Chinese independent exporter route — specifically through Anhui Gangya Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. / CAT Excavator Export — offers the most balanced combination of cost, lead time, and verifiable quality. We are not affiliated with Caterpillar Inc. We simply source, inspect, and export used machines. If you see a model you need in our inventory, ask for the start-up video and inspection report. If you do not see it, ask us to source it. We will tell you what is possible, what it costs, and how long it will take.
